BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team returned to the .500 mark and picked up their first Mid-American Conference victory of the season as the Bulls downed visiting Chicago State, 5-0, at the University Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Bulls (7-7, 1-2 MAC) jumped out early with two doubles wins against a depleted Chicago State (0-17, 0-4 MAC) lineup. The number two team of Marcelo Mazzetto and Travis Zappia scored a shutout win over Dave Regus and Viet Lam, 8-0, to lead the Bulls in doubles play.
UB quickly finished off the Cougars with wins at the bottom four singles slots. Jason Shkodnik scored a "double-bagel" win in the fourth singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Regus while Alex Kalinin, at number three, allowed just one game against him in his 6-1, 6-0 win over Lam.
Two matches were stopped just short of completion by rain. Both Vusa Hove, at number one, and Jason Simon, at number two, had big second set leads after winning their first sets when play was halted.
"We're happy to get back to .500 and get a win in the MAC," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We started really well and that was our goal. We're looking forward to our matches at St. Bonaventure and Niagara."
The Bulls travel to St. Bonaventure for a match on Tuesday afternoon. UB will face Niagara on the road on Thursday afternoon.
