BOWLING GREEN, OH – Zach Filzen became just the fifth player in the history of the Mid-American Conference to make 100 three-pointers in a season, but it wasn't enough as the University at Buffalo men's basketball team fell to Bowling Green, 73-63, at Anderson Arena on Saturday afternoon in the final regular season game of the season.
Filzen connected on his first three of the game for the milestone shot. However, the junior guard played a season-low 19 minutes and scored just five points.
Bowling Green, playing its final regular season game at Anderson Arena before moving to a new facility next year, had an enthusiastic crowd on hand and the Falcons fed off it. Leading 17-16, Bowling Green mounted a 10-2 scoring run to take a 26-18 lead. The Falcons extended their lead to 37-24 at halftime.
Bowling Green built its lead to 62-45 with 5:57 left, before the Bulls, with three freshmen on the floor, were able to cut the Falcon advantage to 64-57 with 2:49 left. Jarod Oldham and Auraum Nuiriankh played big roles in the comeback effort. Oldham had four points and a pair of steals and Nuiriankh added four points and five rebounds. However, Bowling Green was able to seal the win at the free throw line.
Freshman Javon McCrea led the Bulls with 19 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks. The Bulls had success in the post as they scored 38 points in the paint. Titus Robinson added 10 points for UB.
Like Filzen, it was also a milestone day for senior point guard Byron Mulkey who had four steals to bring his season total to 76 and tie Brian Houston (1990) for the single-season school record. Mulkey also had 10 points and three assists.
"We didn't have enough energy defensively or on the glass today," head coach Reggie Witherspoon said. "We settled for jump shots and we didn't run up and down the court well."
Buffalo (17-12, 8-8 MAC) will be the eighth seed in the upcoming First Energy Mid-American Conference Tournament and will host ninth-seeded Central Michigan on Tuesday night at Alumni Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
