Bulls Fall To Hot-Shooting Bowling Green In Regular Season Finale

BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team concluded the regular season on Wednesday evening, but fell to a hot-shooting Bowling Green squad, 92-68. The Falcons hit 16 threes in what is likely the final women's basketball game ever at Anderson Arena. The Bulls now begin MAC Tournament play on Saturday evening as they host Ball State in the first round.
The Falcons led throughout the game, but the Bulls got another 30-point game from senior Kourtney Brown, who became UB's all-time leading basketball scorer, surpassing the men's all-time scorer with her 32-point night. Brown's two blocks also give her 251 for her career, moving her to first all-time in the Mid-American Conference in career blocks, breaking a mark that has stood for 22 years. Brown had 16 points in the opening half on 7-of-10 shooting, but the Bulls had just three players record points in the opening half. The Falcons used a 10-0 run midway through that first half as they took a 41-28 lead into the break.
Bowling Green began the second half on an 11-2 run as the Falcons led by as many as 29 in the second half. UB tried to fight back late as Brown continued to impress the road crowd, with another 16 points and five rebounds. The Bulls were able to cut it to the final margin on a three by Nicki Hopkins as time expired, making it very possible that Hopkins will have hit the last shot in the history of women's basketball at Anderson Arena.
The Bulls had 10 different scorers, led by Brown's 32. As mentioned she now has 1,923 points for her career, which move her past the men's all-time leading scorer, Rasaun Young who finished his career with 1,908 points. Brown added nine rebounds and two blocks, setting the MAC record and giving her 95 for the season.
Senior Jessica Fortman also finished in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds, while adding four assists. Ashley Zuber had eight points and three assists, while Bridgette Kendricks finished with six points, all in the second half, a career-high four assists and three steals. Hopkins finished with three points, while Ephesia Holmes, Margeaux Gupilan, Kristen Sharkey and Teresa Semalulu all had two points. Gupilan added two rebounds and an assist. Freshman Rachel Bantelman added a point on a free throw.
The Falcons, who held Senior Day for six players, had four players in double figures led by 22 from Lauren Prochaska.
UB will begin tournament play on Saturday evening as it hosts Ball State in the first round at 7:00 pm in Alumni Arena. The Bulls enter the 2011 MAC Tournament as the six seed.
