Bulls Drop Sunday Matinee To FDU, 63-54

STORRS, CT – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team concluded play at the World Vision Classic on Sunday, falling to Fairleigh Dickinson, 63-54. The loss drops UB's record to 2-5 on the season.
The game was close throughout, but again it was Buffalo's inability to pull down the big rebounds that hurt it. UB was outrebounded in the contest, 55 to 39, as FDU pulled down 23 offensive rebounds.
The Bulls led for the majority of the first half, but never by more than three points. That lead came with 5:53 remaining in the opening half on a jumper from senior Brittany Hedderson. The Bulls would go on to take a two-point lead into the half.
FDU came out in the second half and went on a 13-3 run over the first five and a half minutes, taking a 35-27 lead. The Bulls came back with a run of their own as they tied things up at 39-39 on a three pointer from freshman Valerie Majewski at the 9:16 mark. However, the Knights scored four straight points from there, en route to 10-2 run. The Bulls would get no closer than four for the remainder of the contest.
Hedderson led the way with 17 points, four assists and four rebounds. Sophomore Rachel Bantelman had a career game as she finished with nine points and six rebounds. The Olean, NY native added two assists and a steal. Nytor Longar also finished with nine points and six rebounds, swatting away two shots in 24 minutes of action.
Senior Ephesia Holmes and freshman Christa Baccas each finished with five points, while Beth Christensen had four points, a team-high nine rebounds and four steals. Majewski finished with three points, hitting a triple for the fourth straight game.
FDU (2-5) was led by 28 points from Mariyah Laury, who had 28 points and eight rebounds. She went 15-of-16 from the free throw line. As a team, the Knights went 27-of-31 from the charity stripe.
After playing six of their first seven games away from home, the Bulls will return to Alumni Arena for two straight. UB will host Kids Day on Wednesday when it faces Wright State. Tipoff is a special 12:00 pm start.
