Long Range Shooting Leads Dayton Past Buffalo, 94-74

STORRS, CT – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team had its highest scoring output of the season, but was unable to overcome 15 Dayton three-pointers, as they fell to the Flyers, 94-74, on the opening day of the World Vision Classic at the Gampel Pavilion.
The Flyers opened the game on an 8-0 run, but the Bulls wouldn't go down quietly as junior Nicki Hopkins nailed a three-pointer to opening the Buffalo scoring. UB would go on to take its first lead of the game at the 12:11 mark of the first half as a layup by Rachel Bantelman gave the Bulls a 13-12 lead. UB continued to lead by two at 18-16 following a pair of free throws from Nytor Longar, but from there Dayton went on a 14-0 run to take a 30-18 lead. The Bulls would cut it in to single digits just one more time, trailing 33-24, but Dayton ended the half on a 17-10 run.
Dayton began the second half with six straight points to take their largest lead of the game at 56-34. UB got it to within 15 in the second half, but Dayton seemed to have an answer every time the Bulls made a run. In the second half alone, the Flyers took 23 three-pointers, hitting nine of them.
Senior Brittany Hedderson finished with her second straight 20-point game as she had a game-high 22 points, adding three assists and four rebounds. The Bulls got a break out game from freshman Christa Baccas, who started for the first time in her career. She had some great chemistry with sophomore point guard Margeaux Gupilan, finishing with a career-best 13 points, including a 7-of-9 performance from the free throw line. The Hillburn, NY native added six rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Bantelman added a career-best eight points, also pulling down five boards. Longar had seven points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots, while Ephesia Holmes also added seven points, all from the free throw line. Freshman Valerie Majewski had another solid evening off the bench, finishing with six points on two made three pointers. Hopkins, who picked up her first start of the season, finished with four points. Gupilan added four as well, while Beth Christensen came off the bench for three.
The Flyers (2-2) shot 15-of-42 from three point range in the game as they had four players in double figures. Justine Raterman led the way with 20 points, while Ally Mallot added 18 points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Bulls will return to action tomorrow night when they face second-ranked Connecticut Huskies. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
