EAST PROVIDENCE, RI – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team opened the spring dual meet season on Saturday with a 5-2 loss against Brown at Centre Court in East Providence, RI.
The Bulls picked up a pair of singles wins for their two points. At number one, Wojciech Starakiewicz scored a 6-4, 7-6 win over Brandon Burke. George Tibil, playing in the fourth slot, defeated Tom Deighton in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. Brown won the remainder of the singles matches in straight sets.
In doubles, UB scored a win at number three as Tibil combined with Vusa Hove to down Charlie Posner and Sam Fife, 8-4. UB's top duo of Marcelo Mazzetto and Mitch Zenaty, ranked seventh in the Northeast region had a tough battle but fell in a tiebreaker to Soufiane Azargoui and Burke, 9-8 (6).
"This was the first match of the season and we certainly played like it," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "We let too many opportunities pass in doubles and then fell a bit flat in a few of the singles matches. We are going to reevaluate things and come out against a good Bryant team with a chip on our shoulder."
The Bulls face Bryant at 8:30 pm on Saturday night.
