Women Win Harry Anderson Meet
The University at Buffalo cross country squads sent a limited number of individuals to Saturday's Harry F. Anderson Invitational at Roberts Wesleyan College as the UB women won the team title. UB's women's squad, which rested many of its top runners, won the team title with 44 points with Rochester placing second at 60 points in the 11-team meet. UB was the only Division I team in the field. The UB men sent only two runners to the meet, not enough for a full team, but both runners finished in the top six individually.
Four Women Place in Top Nine
In the women's 5K race, UB placed four runners in spots 6-9 with freshman Hilary Swartwood earning the title of UB's top finisher in 19:45.91. Senior Kristen Swanson was seventh in 19:47.03. Freshman Becky Martin placed eighth in 19:52.26 and senior Lauren Cavaliere took ninth in 19:53.11. A total of 106 runners competed in the women's race with Mercyhurst's Cherie Jackson winning top honors in 18:39.03.
Men's Squad Races Pair of Freshmen
The UB men sent just two freshman runners to the Harry Anderson meet, with both finishing in the top six among the 94 entrants in the 8K race. Freshman Aaron Walker placed third behind a pair of Rochester runners in 26:43.81, while freshman Cord Sgaglio was sixth in 26:58.40.
Mitchell's Musings
Following her team's performance, head coach Vicki Mitchell commented on Saturday's meet. "The women ran very well. Our "B" team with several freshmen running and a couple of seniors had their breakout races," said Mitchell. "Kristen Swanson and Lauren Cavaliere both ran outstanding races, they ran even and gradually moved up through the pack, and finished the strongest that I have ever seen. Both ran personal best times and I was thrilled for them. Hilary [Swartwood] and Becky [Martin], both freshmen, ran outstanding races improving their times from last week significantly. The win for the women's team was bonus; and well deserved as it was a true team effort. Jackie Cavalluzzo ran her first race in a year on her way to a comeback from knee surgery in June." On her men's runners, Mitchell remarked, "the two freshmen men ran outstanding races, learning very quickly in just their second 8K race, both improved greatly over last week's debut. "
In the Shadow of the Golden Dome
The full Bulls squad will next race at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, October 1. One of the most competitive meets in the country, this is the first time that the Bulls will be racing on the Notre Dame campus. "Notre Dame will give us the opportunity to see several MAC schools, and compete on a very fast course," said Mitchell. "The races, divided into to two groups, Blue and Gold, are highly competitive races. This is our first time to the Notre Dame Invite and the teams are very excited to compete at one of the nation's best invitationals."
