Bulls Win 12 Inning Thriller to Split with Central Michigan

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team split a doubleheader with conference leader Central Michigan this afternoon, dropping game one, 7-0, but taking game two in dramatic fashion, 4-3, after 12 innings of play. Lindsay Hampton singled in the bottom of the 12th inning to earn the game winning RBI.
Sharon Barr pitched the complete game, holding Central
Michigan to three earned runs, striking out six batters in seven
innings of work.The Bulls couldn't get on the board in game
one, collecting five hits throughout the game, compared to Central
Michigan's 10 hits. The Chippewa's scored early and
often, putting up seven runs in the game. Central Michigan's
Christina Novak led off the game with a solo home run, setting the
pace for the Chippewas. Errors hurt the Bulls, as Central Michigan
scored four runs off Buffalo errors. Kristen

Bejaranoeach added a hit for the Bulls.
Game two was a defensive dual, as the first six innings were scoreless for both teams. Central Michigan scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but the Bulls countered with two of their own to force extra innings. The seventh inning runs came after Taylor Franich singled down the right field line and advanced to second on a stolen base. Kristin Waldron grounded out, but Franich was able to advance to third on the play. Jessica Griffinslammed a double to left center to drive in the run. Dominique Carcone replaced Griffin on base, scoring on an RBI single from Ward to tie the game. The ninth and tenth innings were scoreless and each team scored a run in the 11th inning to maintain the stalemate. With Barr placed on second in the bottom of the 12th, Ward was able to bunt her over to third on the sacrifice, setting up Hampton for the game winning RBI. Hampton singled to left field, sending Barr home for the run to ultimately end the game.
Terese Diaz pitched the complete game, earning her fifth win of the season, striking out 10 batters, while holding the Chippewas to one earned run in 12 innings.
The Bulls will continue their home stand tomorrow, hosting MAC rival Eastern Michigan. First pitch is set for 2 pm at Nan Harvey Field.
