Late Score Lifts Bulls Over Canisius

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat cross-town rival Canisius, 4-3. Taylor Franich hit the game winning RBI to lift the Bulls over the Golden Griffins in dramatic fashion.
The Bulls got on the board first, scoring three runs in the bottom
of the third inning, beginning with a pair of hits from Alyssa
Ward and Alex
Bejarano. Terese
Diaz walked to load the bases.Lindsay
Hampton hit the ball to shortstop, sending in the first
run. A throwing error by Canisius gave the Bulls a two run lead,
and Bertot earned the final RBI of the inning to give the Bulls the
3-0 lead. Canisius countered scoring two of their own in the top of
the fourth and tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth.
With the game tied going into the bottom of the seventh, the Bulls
strung together hits from Candice
Sheehan and Ashley
Bertot to put two runners on base. With Kristen
Gallipanipinch running for Sheehan, her and Bertot each stole a
base, setting up Franich for the game winning hit. Franich singled
to send home the winning run and ultimately end the game.
Bertot's stolen base was her 18th of the season, which ties
Gallipani's single season record for stolen bases, set last
year.
Terese Diaz pitched the complete game, holding the Golden Griffins to three runs, while walking one batter and striking out seven.
The Bulls will host MAC rivals Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan this weekend, with the doubleheader against the Chippewas set for Friday, April 30 beginning at 1 pm at Nan Harvey Field.
