Bulls Score Early to Earn Series Split with Kent State

KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team scored two early runs to earn the series split with Kent State this afternoon, defeating the Golden Flashes, 2-1. The Bulls tallied seven hits throughout the game as they evened their Mid-American Conference record at 3-3.

The Bulls had a strong opening inning that would carry them throughout the game as Ashley Bertot led off the batting order with a single and successfully stole second. Kristin Waldron followed in her footsteps with a single of her own, which advanced Bertot to third. Jessica Griffinsingled to earn the RBI as Bertot scored the first run of the game. Waldron earned the second run on a wild pitch to give the Bulls the early 2-0 lead.

The Buffalo defense stranded five Kent State runners on base including three in the bottom of the first inning to keep the lead. The Golden Flashes' Mary Holt hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to bring them within one, but the Bulls held on to earn the win. The Bulls had a chance to extend their lead towards the end of the game, but the Golden Flashes stranded two Buffalo runners on base in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Waldron and Griffin had two hits each, while Bertot,Terese Diaz and Taylor Franich each added a hit to the Buffalo tally.
Sharon Barr earned the win, pitching the complete game for Buffalo. Barr held the Golden Flashes to six hits and one run in seven innings of work, while striking out 11 batters.
The Bulls host St. Bonaventure in their long awaited home opener on Wednesday, April 14. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm at Nan Harvey Field.
