Bulls Split at San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO, CA – The University at Buffalo softball team split their second day of play at the San Diego Classic, defeating Big Ten foe Wisconsin, 8-4, but falling to Long Beach State, 6-2, to bring their overall record to 5-6.

In the first game, Wisconsin jumped out to a lead scoring two runs in both the first and third innings, but Buffalo responded, coming back with a five-run fifth inning to take the momentum back. Alex Bejarano,Candice Sheehan and Taylor Franich each knocked in an RBI, whileKristin Waldron closed the inning out with a triple to center field to earn two RBIs. With the triple, Waldron ties the school record for most triples in a career with seven. Buffalo scored three more in the bottom of the sixth. With Lindsay Hampton and Jessica Griffin on base, Sheehan singled to earn her second RBI of the game. Waldron followed up with an RBI single of her own, as did Franich, to seal the 8-4 Buffalo win.

Against Long Beach State, the Bulls had five total hits and an RBI from Franich. The 49ers took an early lead with a four-run second inning. Buffalo's comeback wasn't enough this time as they only managed to score two runs in the top of the third inning. Griffin singled up the middle to start the third inning rally. Franich tripled to left center to earn the RBI and was able to make it around the bases for a score after a Long Beach State error. The 49ers went on to score two more runs to end the game with a 6-2 score. Sharon Barr started game two on the mound and was relieved by Terese Diaz after four innings. They combined for eight strikeouts for the day. Franich led the Bulls at the plate, tallying three hits and three RBIs on the day.
The Bulls will play one final game at the San Diego Classic tomorrow when they take on UCLA at 2:30 pm.
