Bulls Split at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, CA – The University at Buffalo softball team played a mid-week doubleheader against UC Riverside this afternoon, winning the first game 5-4, but dropping the nightcap 3-1. Terese Diaz led the team with four RBIs, including a two-run home run to bring the Bulls' record to 6-7 overall.

The first game of the afternoon was relatively even, with both teams tallying nine hits and one error. UB set the tone of the game with a two-run home run from Diaz in the top of the first inning. The Highlanders came back with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Bulls extended their lead by scoring a run of their own in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI from Andi Saucier. The Highlanders rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three quick runs, but Buffalo scored the game-winning runs in the top of the seventh, as they strung together four hits from Jessica Griffin, Kristin Waldron,Taylor Franich and Diaz, with Waldron and Diaz earning the RBI. The Bulls held off the home team in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win. Diaz started on the mound for Buffalo, pitching 5.1 innings, before Sharon Barr came in as relief, pitching the remaining 1.2 innings to pick up the victory.

In the nightcap, the first three innings were scoreless for both teams, but UC Riverside got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Buffalo's only run of the game came in the top of the sixth inning as Franich singled to third base and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alyssa Ward, setting up Diaz for her fourth RBI of the day. Diaz slammed the ball to left field allowing Franich to score, however the equalizer wasn't enough as the Highlanders went on to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the game.
The Bulls are back at it tomorrow as they take on San Diego State in a 9:00 pm (ET) game at SDSU Softball Stadium.
