BOCA RATON, FL – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team concluded its three-match trip to Florida with a 4-1 loss to No. 75 Troy. The Bulls are now 4-4 while Troy is 10-3.
For the sixth time during the spring campaign, the Bulls clinched the opening point with victories at first and third doubles. The number one team of Wojciech Starakiewicz and Kirill Kolomyts, ranked 10th in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, gave UB the winning point with an 8-4 win over Luis Henrique Grangeiro and Mario Rolemberg. The number three team of Vusa Hove and Mitch Zenaty remained undefeated as a duo, picking up an 8-6 win over Guilherme Sahadi and Anas Rouchdi.
Troy quickly closed the match with four straight wins. Two matches, both in the third set, were stopped when the Trojans clinched the win. Starakiewicz, at number one, was tied, 2-2, in the final set against Grangeiro while Hove led Sahadi, 4-2, in the final set.
The Bulls completed their Florida trip 1-2, defeating Southern Illinois while falling to Florida Atlantic and Troy. The matches were the first outdoor competitions of the spring for the Bulls. "We had a chance to get outdoors and play three quality opponents over spring break," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We learned a lot, and feel that we are prepared to play in any conditions we face. We competed well all three matches, and our goal is to continue to get better every day as we head into conference play."
Although the Bulls are leaving Florida, their spring break matches are not done. UB returns home to the Miller Tennis Center to host Robert Morris on Thursday at 2:00 pm. The Bulls then travel to Duquesne on Saturday.
