WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – Playing their fourth match in five days, the University at Buffalo men's tennis team shut out visiting Robert Morris, 7-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center. The Bulls (5-4) did not lose a set to the Colonials (3-9) in a match that lasted just over two hours.
For the seventh time in nine matches and fifth time in a row, the Bulls jumped out in front by claiming the opening doubles point. The number one combo of Wojciech Starakiewicz and Kirill Kolomyts, ranked 10th in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, scored an 8-0 shutout win over David Pinto and Igor Neves. The point was clinched as Mitch Zenaty and Eric Rothstein, paired at number three for the first time this spring scored an 8-1 win over Grigory Sovko and Andre Coiro. Once the Bulls clinched the doubles point, play in the number two match was stopped with UB leading 5-3.
In singles play, Starakiewicz, ranked third in the Northeast, scored a "double-bagel" win over Sovko in just over a half hour to pace the Bulls. Marcelo Mazzetto and Kolomyts, at second and third singles, respectively, scored 6-0 first set wins en route to their victories to clinch the match.
The Bulls juggled the bottom half of the lineup by moving Vusa Hove to fourth singles from six and inserting Kristof Custers in the sixth slot while Alex Kalinin remained in the fifth slot as all three won in straight sets. Starakiewicz, Mazzetto and Kalinin are now tied for the team lead with 11 singles wins each this season.
Although the Bulls returned to the court just 12 hours after landing in Buffalo following their matches in Florida, the team was focused when it came down to facing the Colonials. "I didn't do us any favors by scheduling this match," said head coach Lee Nickell. "Any time we can play against a good team, we'll take it. Duquesne is a very tough team and this match gave us a good warmup for playing in Pittsburgh."
The Bulls face the Dukes on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
