BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo volleyball freshman Kelly Svoboda has been named the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week, the Mid-American Conference announced from their offices in Cleveland this morning. The honor is the first of Svoboda's career.
Svoboda had 40 digs on the weekend, including a career-high 25 digs against Ohio. The Cleveland, OH native helped the Bulls to just their second ever win over the Bobcats and their first since 1999. Three of her 25 digs came in the fifth set where Buffalo was able to overcome an 8-4 deficit and take the set 15-12.
Svoboda leads the team with 393 digs and is fourth on the team with 22 service aces. This is also the second straight weekend that a UB freshman has been named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week as Carissa McKenna took home the honor last week. Earlier this season, senior Kristin Bignell was also named Defensive Player of the Week, while junior Abby Niekamp was honored as the Offensive Player of the Week.
The Bulls close out the regular season this week as they head to Akron on Thursday night and Toledo on Saturday.
