
UB Falls To Division-Leading Akron, 3-0

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team returned home to Alumni Arena on Thursday night, but was unable to take down the MAC East Division leaders, falling to Akron. 3-0. The loss was just the second at home for the Bulls this season.
The Zips took the match, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 as they hit .268 for the match, opposed to UB's .168. UB led early on in the first set, staking their way out to a 12-6 advantage, but the Zips responded with six straight points to tie it up. The set continued to be tied up at 22-22, when Akron recorded the final three points.
The Bulls also had an advantage in the third set, taking an early 12-7 lead. Akron responded with a 13-4 run to go up 20-16. The Zips furthered their lead to 24-19 when it looked like UB might have a comeback in store. The Bulls scored four straight points to get it within 24-23, but the Zips ended the match with a kill to take the set 25-23.
UB was led by 11 kills from Kayla Govier and nine kills from Marisa Hornbaker. Fellow senior Kristin Bignell wadded eight kills and three blocks. Junior Abby Niekamp and freshman Christine Fritsche each finished with six kills.
Running the UB offense solely for the first time this season, freshman Dani Reinert had 35 assists and seven digs. Freshman Kelly Svoboda led the way in the digging department with 14, while junior Heather Pyle added 13. Fritsche added nine digs, while Hornbaker had six.
The Bulls remain home on Saturday night as they begin play against the MAC West with Ball State. The match is set for 5:00 pm.
