Bulls Pick Up First MAC Victory At Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo volleyball team came back from a tough loss on Friday night to pick up their first Mid-American Conference victory on Saturday afternoon as the Bulls defeated Bowling Green, 3-1, at Anderson Arena. The win improves UB's record to 10-5 on the season and 1-1 in the MAC. The win against the Falcons was UB's first against Bowling Green since 2003 and just their second all-time. Not only was it UB's first win at Bowling Green, but it was also the first time since joining the conference in 1998 that UB has picked up a victory on the opening weekend of conference play.
The Bulls took the match 25-19, 26-28, 25-15, 25-20 as UB hit .331 for the match, including .533 in the opening set. The Bulls allowed Bowling Green to hit just .208 for the match. Buffalo was led for the second straight day by junior Marisa Hornbaker, who had 21 kills, on a career-high 48 attempts. Senior Dani Silvers added 14 kills and just three errors, while redshirt junior Kelsey Lueders had 10 kills and one error on 15 total attempts.
Junior setter Lindsey Schlegel flirted with a triple-double as she finished with a season-high 48 assists, while adding seven kills and nine digs. Schlegel committed no hitting errors on her 17 attempts. Freshman Tori Beckman had a match-high 15 digs, while Hornbaker completed the double-double with 10 digs.
As a team the Bulls recorded eight total blocks, led by Abby Niekamp's seven total blocks. Junior Kristin Bignell added six total blocks on the afternoon.
"I was pleased with the way we came back today after a tough loss on Friday night," said head coach Todd Kress. "It will be nice to finally be back home this upcoming weekend after spending the last two on the road. We will work hard this week in practice as we get ready for two more very good teams next week."
Bowling Green was led by 17 kills from Shari Luther and 15 kills from Corey Domek. Allison Kearny had 14 digs and 43 assists to lead the way for the Falcons.
The Bulls are back in action this upcoming weekend as they return home for a couple of conference matches. UB takes on Kent State on Friday and Ohio on Saturday. Both matches are set for 7:00 pm.
