Bulls Successful in First Day of Zippy Invite

AKRON, OH- The University at Buffalo swimming and diving team kicked off day one of the annual Zippy Invite, hosted by the University of Akron this afternoon. After the first day, the women stand in fourth place, while the reigning meet champion men's team sits in second place.

The women's team opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Jessie Koltz, Sam Palma, Jordan Deren and Caroline Simmons finished in a time of 1:35.57. Deren swam the 500 freestyle in the first women's individual event, earning a fourth-place finish in a time of 5:04.08. Emma Miller (5:12.04), Amanda Reall (5:12.33) and Kim Dale (5:13.88) finished respectively in the bonus consolation final heat. In the 200 IM, Brynn Marecki took fourth place in a time of 2:09.01, with Alie Schirmers following close behind in seventh place with a time of 2:09.88. Karly Moore took 15th in a time of 2:11.92. Katelyn Pratt-Collins won the bonus consolation heat in a season-best time of 2:11.69. Simmons tied for first place in the 50 freestyle in a season-best time of 23.46, tying Akron's Steph Zielinski. Koltz took eighth place in a time of 23.98, while Palma took 15th in a time of 24.48. The women's team wrapped up the night with a ninth-place finish in the 400 medley relay.

For the men, the team of Simon Proudfoot, Jared Heine, Andrew Tamchyna and Chad Miller took a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:24.65). Connor Vander Zalm finished 10th in the 500 freestyle relay with a season-best time of 4:42:15. Zach Rice finished 22nd in the bonus consolation heat of the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:53. In the men's 200 IM, Zach Ruske picked up a fourth-place points with a time of 1:55.61. Freshman Josh Meints won the consolation final in a time of 1:56.26 and Chris Berloth won the bonus consolation heat in a time of 1:57.54. In the 50 freestyle, Proudfoot took seventh (21.38) and Tamchyna (21.47) and Miller (21.84) took ninth and sixteenth, respectively, in the event. Freshman Matt Hogan won the bonus consolation heat of the 50 freestyle, finishing in a time of 21.59 and Ryan Smrekar took 20th in a time of 21.85. The men closed out the night with a fourth place finish in the 400 medley relay.

The Buffalo divers performed well, with Meili Carpenter taking the first-place spot in the women's one-meter final, scoring 311.45 points, the only diver to score over 300 points in the event. Carpenter earned both meet and pool records with her finish. Ursula Jeske took eighth in the event with a score of 206.95. Colin Patrican stole the show on the men's side, picking up first-place points in the three-meter event with a score of 287.55. Kenny Rhoades finished third with a score of 282.40.
