BUFFALO, NY – The UB women's volleyball team swept the MAC East Player of the Week awards following their two matches this past weekend. Junior Kristin Bignell was honored as the Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman Tori Beckman picked up her second Defensive Player of the Week award this season.
"To sweep the awards this week says a lot for us as a program," said head coach Todd Kress. "We have six tough teams in this division and to win these awards is a huge step forward in the right direction."
Bignell led the team in hitting this past weekend with a .368 mark. She had 14 kills against Western Michigan and added another 12 against Northern Illinois. She also added six total blocks on the weekend, including two solos. Bignell currently leads the team and is second in the MAC in blocks at 1.08 per set. She is fourth on the team in kills with 127.
"I am extremely proud of Kristin for being acknowledged as the offensive player of the week," said Kress. "We moved her over to a different position this year and every day she continues to get better."
"I very happy that Tori was recognized for her performance this past weekend," said Kress. "To win this award twice as a freshman speaks volumes to her contribution to this team. She has continued to get better each day and will continue to grow as this season progresses."
The Bulls hit the road this weekend as they head to Central Michigan on Friday night and Eastern Michigan on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7:00 pm.
