Sharon S. Sanford is a 32-year veteran of the University at Buffalo and serves as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Recreation and Sport management. A member of the Athletics executive team, Sharon is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Recreation department including oversight of Aquatics, Group Fitness, Informal Recreation, Intramural Sports, Risk Management, the Bulls Team Shop and Recreation Instructional classes which services all 29,000+ UB undergraduate and graduate students, as well as, faculty, staff and community patrons on both North and South campuses.

In addition, Sharon serves as the sport administrator for women’s swimming and diving and is the former administrator for men’s swimming and diving and women’s rowing. Under Sharon’s leadership, UB earned its first MAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship in 20 21, first CAA Rowing Championship in 2010 and first MAC Men’s swimming and diving championship in 2011. She has contributed and expanded her role in the athletics department and held several positions during her tenure including Assistant Athletic Director for Community Relations, Assistant Athletic Director for Student Development and Special Assistant to the Athletic Director.

Sharon has served and continues to serve on numerous committees and organizations including Chair of the NCAA Division I Rowing Committee, Mid-American Conference Diversity and Inclusion Mentoring Program, Western New York Girls in Sports Foundation and the Mid-American Conference Recreation Directors Association. Her efforts have earned her the national recognition as the 2012 Nell Jackson Administrator of the year from the Women Leaders in College Sports (formally NACWAA) organization and contributed to earning the department recognition by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University for Overall Excellence in Diversity, Title IX Compliance and Employee Gender Diversity.

A Buffalo native, Sanford holds a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in student personnel administration, both from Buffalo State College.
