Robert J. Smolinski, MD

Dr. Robert Smolinski has been the University at Buffalo team physician and orthopedist since 1991. Smolinski graduated from the University of Notre Dame and the UB School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic residency at UB and a fellowship in sports medicine at Cincinnati. Smolinski is the Director of the University at Buffalo Sports Medicine Institute. He was the Director of Medical Clinics for both the World University Games and the Empire State Games held at UB. Smolinski is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.
William M. Wind, Jr., MD

Dr. William Wind is a sports medicine orthopaedic physician specializing in knee & shoulder arthroscopy with UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine since 2003. He is full time faculty as a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo. He serves as the head Team Physician for UB football and cares for many other athletes at UB. Dr. Wind completed both medical school and his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University at Buffalo. He attended the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio to complete his fellowship and training in sports medicine, knee & shoulder arthroscopy.
His practice is located in Amherst, conveniently located adjacent to the UB North Campus. He also has offices and operates in Orchard Park, Amherst and Niagara Falls.
Dr. Wind is also the assistant team physician for the Buffalo Bills and Sabres. He is the head Team Physician for other local universities including Niagara University and Niagara Community College. He is actively involved in the care of numerous local high schools. Dr. Wind is an active member of various societies including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine and the NHL Team Physician Society.
Michael S. Freitas, MD

Dr. Freitas is a board-certified (in sports medicine and family medicine) and fellowship-trained physician who is also a licensed physical therapist, holding a Master’s Degree in physical therapy from Northeastern University.
In addition to serving as Head Team Medical Physician for University at Buffalo Athletics, Dr. Freitas is currently Team Physician for the Buffalo Sabres, Rochester Americans, Niagara University, Daemen College, and serves as a Medical Consultant for the Buffalo Bills. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Orthopedics, and Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. He is the Medical Director of the University at Buffalo’s Athletic Training Program and is the Program Director for the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. He is an active member of the Mid America Conference Medical Advisory Committee. He also maintains a private primary care practice through Highgate Medical Group in Amherst, NY.
Dr. Freitas’ expertise lies in the medical care of athletes of all ages and abilities, including sports injuries, concussion/post-concussion syndrome, shoulder/elbow, spinal cord injuries, back and neck, hip and core muscle injury, acute injury care, diagnostic ultrasound examination, overuse/repetitive injuries and office-based sports medicine procedures. He also specializes in injection therapies, including ultrasound-guided injections and biologic treatments like platelet rich plasma.
Brandon Brownell, MD
Team Physician
Brownell is a Western New York native who graduated from Ross University School of Medicine and earned his Master of Science degree at Canisius College, specializing in Health and Human Performance. He completed his residency with the University at Buffalo in the Department of Family Medicine before specializing in sports medicine. Brownell is currently the team physician for the UB Bulls Division-1 Men's and Women's Basketball teams and Rochester American's Hockey team.
John L. Leddy, MD

Dr. John J. Leddy received his undergraduate degree from Fordham and his medical degree from Buffalo. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at New England Deaconess Hospital and Harvard University, followed by a Faculty Development Sports Medicine Fellowship at Buffalo and the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Leddy is board certified in Internal Medicine and has a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. He is a UB Associate Professor for Clinical Orthopedics and the Associate Director of the UB Sports Medicine Institute. Leddy has been a UB team physician since 1991.

Dr. Mike Lawther serves as the Team Chiropractor for University at Buffalo Athletics. A Pittsburgh native, he earned both his undergraduate degree in Athletic Training and master’s degrees in Sports Medicine and Nutrition from the University of Pittsburgh before moving to Buffalo in 2013 to work with UB Athletics as an Athletic Trainer primarily with the Wrestling team as well as both Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams.
Dr. Lawther later earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from D’Youville University, founding Movement Without Limits Performance Chiropractic to further his mission of helping athletes optimize movement, performance, and recovery. His practice is located just behind UB’s North Campus on North Forest Road.

Cullan Donnelly, MD
Sports Medicine Fellow
Dr. Donnelly is a Buffalonian born and raised. He attended UB for his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences and stayed to obtain his MD at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 2022. He then left to complete his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Rochester where he trained in a Level 1 Trauma Center, seeing a vast array of trauma, orthopedic injuries, and hands-on Resuscitations.
