Bulls Face the Falcons on Tuesday Night

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball program (13-7, 3-5 MAC) travel to Bowling Green to face the Falcons (13-7, 4-4 MAC) on Tuesday night. This will be the only meeting between the programs this season. Tip-off from the Stroh Center will be at 7 p.m. on ESPN+. Josh Whetzel will be on the radio call on Buffalo 1520/Rochester 1280 and on the Varsity Network App.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bulls are coming off a tough 68-67 home loss to the UMass Minutemen on Friday evening. In the loss, Ryan Sabol led the Bulls in scoring for the second straight game with 27 points as he played every minute. From the floor, he finished 10-of-18 including 5-of-12 from three-point range while adding five assists. Daniel Freitag scored 18 points with seven assists. Noah Batchelor tied his career-high with in points with 16. This marked the fifth time this season the Bulls had at least three players score 15 or more points in the same contest.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• Bowling Green Head Coach Todd Simon is in his third season with the Falcons where he's led them to a 47-39 (.547) overall record. Prior to his time at Bowling Green, he spent seven seasons at Southern Utah from 2016-23 where he went 120-107 (.529). In 2015-16, he was the head coach at UNLV where the Rebels went 18-15 (.545) in his lone season. Simon holds a 185-161 (.535) overall record.
• The Falcons were selected seventh in the 13-team league in the Mid-American Conference Preseason Poll with 73 points. Javontae Campbell was named to the Preseason All-MAC First Team.
• The Falcons are led by Javontae Campbell as he's averaging 18.6 ppg. At the glass, Sam Towns leads the team with 6.5 rpg.
• In the national rankings, Bowling Green leads the country with 11.3 spg.
THE BULL-ETIN BOARD
• Ryan Sabol has been sensational over the last three games. He's averaging 24.3 ppg, the second most in the MAC as his 73 points scored in this span leads the league. The sharp three-point shooter made the most threes with 14. From the floor, he is 27-of-53 for a .509 field goal percentage including a .424 three-point percentage as he's 14-of-33. In this stretch, Sabol is the only MAC player with three 20-point performances. The last time a Bull scored 20+ in three straight came in the 2023-24 season.
• Last week, there were only three players in the MAC that scored at least 20 points in two games. Two of them will face off on the same court on Tuesday night in Buffalo's Ryan Sabol (26.5 ppg) and Bowling Green's Javontae Campbell (24.5 ppg). Rob Whaley Jr. from Kent State averaged 27.0 ppg last week.
• Dating back to 2004-05 on available records, this is the first time the Bulls have had six 30-point performances in a single season as Daniel Freitag has done so four times as Ryan Sabol has done it twice this season. The 2012-13 squad finished with five such performances. Over the last three previous seasons, Buffalo only had four 30-point performances.
• Tuesday evening will feature three of the top-five scorers in the Mid-American Conference. Buffalo's Daniel Freitag leads the conference with 20.3 ppg as his teammate Ryan Sabol is fifth with 18.1. Bowling Green's leading scorer is Javontae Campbell who's averaging 18.6 ppg, good for fourth in the MAC.
• The Bulls have made 10+ three-pointers in six of their last nine games, averaging 10.4 per game. In that stretch, they're 94-of-239, good for a .393 three-point percentage. On the season, Buffalo has made at least eight three-pointers in 16 of their 20 games as they're averaging 9.5 per game.
• Ryan Sabol surpassed the 1,000-point mark at Miami (OH) with his 20-point performance. Sabol did so in his 80th game played in the blue and white. He became the 27th Bull in program history to reach this milestone and the first since 2021 MAC Defensive Player of the Year Josh Mballa did so from 2019-22 as he tallied 1,045 points.
• UB has made 190 three-pointers so far this season. 35.8% of their points have come from three-point range, the third-best mark in the MAC behind Miami's 36.0% and Akron's 35.9%.
• Ryan Sabol is the only Bull to score 10+ points in every conference game this season. He's averaging 20.1 ppg, good for fifth in the MAC.
• UB has recorded 22 20-point performances this season. Last year they finished with just 16 such games.
• Daniel Freitag leads the MAC in free throw makes and attempts with 127 and 157, respectfully. He's top-15 in the country in both categories.
• Daniel Freitag (385) and Ryan Sabol (362) have accounted for 47.0% of Buffalo's 1,591 points on the season. They are the highest scoring duo in the MAC as UMass's Leonardo Bettiol (359) and Marcus Banks (341) make up 41.8% of the Minutemen's points.
