BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo swimming and diving team is set to participate in their final competition before hosting Mid-American Conference Championships, heading to Bowling Green and Toledo for a two-day tri-meet.
The Bulls will compete at Bowling Green and against Toledo on Friday at 6 pm. The teams will resume the competition at Toledo on Saturday at 11 am.
The three programs held the same tri-meet last season, with the Bulls beating both the Falcons, 217.5-135.5, and the Rockets, 195-158.
The Falcons are coming off a strong performance at the Butler Invitational, finishing first of five teams with 1,322 points. Bowling Green is 6-3 overall, but 0-2 in the MAC this season. The Rockets are 0-5 on the season and 0-3 against conference opponents, most recently falling to Eastern Michigan, 175-117.
The Bulls head to the state of Ohio following a head-to-head loss on senior day against the defending MAC Champion Akron Zips, 188-118. Despite the loss, the Buffalo swimmers and divers had positives to build on ahead of the final stretch of the season.
The Bulls won both diving events, with Marialis Kwak taking the three-meter (341.03) and the one-meter (294.45). The Buffalo divers combined to take five of the top six spots in the three-meter and seven of the top eight spots in the one-meter.
Karen Austin opened the individual events in the pool for the Bulls with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle. The junior finished the event with a season-best time of 10:36.37. Ava Cunningham trailed to take third for the Bulls too with a time of 10:38.05.
Grace Rider won the 100-yard breaststroke for the Bulls with a time of 1:05.30. Ava Pauly trailed to take fourth (1:05.79). The top four swimmers to place in the event all finished within half a second of each other. Rider later took third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.38, as Pauly trailed to take fourth (2:25.68).
Elise McCaul (1st, 5:07.39) and Isabella Forsman (5:08.07) combined to take first and second place in the 500-yard freestyle. McCaul also earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.33, trailing the first-place swimmer by under a second (1:52.41). The junior's time was a season-best.
Forsman finished second in the 200-yard butterfly too with a time of 2:03.50. The freshman was two seconds shy of her personal record performance (2:01.56). Forsman ended the meet by taking second place one more time in the 100-yard individual medley, finishing the event with a time of 58.44 and falling just shy of her personal record time (58.40).
