BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo Swimming & Diving team will have six divers compete in the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, with the action beginning in the diving well on Sunday and concluding on Wednesday.
The Bulls open their week with a team diving event on Sunday. Buffalo took first place in one of their three team diving events this season, beating out seven schools in attendance at the UB Diving Invite.
On Monday afternoon four Bulls' divers will compete in the preliminary round of one-meter diving. Buffalo had two divers qualify for NCAA National Championships in the one-meter event last year, Marialis Kwak and Victoria Franz. Kwak recently won her first one-meter MAC Championship, earning First Team All-MAC honors and being awarded the MAC's Most Outstanding Diver. The junior set a new personal best at conference championships too, with a score of 313.00, ranking third all-time in school history. Franz did not compete in MAC Championships this season but has been a mainstay on the podium for the Bulls all season. The graduate student earned five MAC Diver of the Week awards this season, tying her own program mark for the most in a single season.
MAC Freshman Diver of the Year Sophie Meuwissen will also compete for the Bulls, following a ninth-place finish in the one-meter finals at MAC Championships. Presley Dorsett rounds out Buffalo's group in the one-meter, placing seventh in the finals at conference championships. Dorsett competed in the one-meter zone diving championships last season, missing the finals cut with a score of 238.80.
The top five finishers in the finals round of one-meter diving will qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Both Kwak and Franz will also compete in the three-meter diving on Tuesday after qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the event last year. Franz, the holder of the school's all-time top score (344.10) is participating in her third consecutive zone diving championship as Kwak competes in her second. Kwak looks to continue her momentum in the three-meter, winning her second MAC title last week with a score 312.65. The junior became the third Buffalo diver to win two MAC Titles at the same MAC Championship.
Dorsett, Kaylee Donovan and Mallory Hanna are set to compete in their first three-meter zone diving championship. Dorsett aims to repeat her performance from the MAC Championships where the junior brought home a bronze medal in the event with a score of 279.55. Donovan rounded out the Bulls finals finishers in the MAC Championship with a sixth place finish and a score of 269.90.
The top five finishers in the finals round of three-meter diving will qualify for the NCAA Championships.
