
Bulls Bring Home Nine Medals at MAC Indoor Championships

YPSILANTI, MICH. – The University at Buffalo Track and Field team closed out MAC Indoor Championships on the campus of Eastern Michigan University on Saturday evening. The Buffalo men finished the weekend in fourth with a score of 93, as the women placed 10th with a score of 28. Throughout the weekend the Bulls earned nine medals, three gold, four silver and two bronze.
Winning his seventh MAC Championship on Saturday in the shot put with a throw of 17.12 meters, Jonathan Surdej now has the most individual event wins in school history at MAC Championships. Surdej has won every shot put MAC Championship for both indoor and outdoor since 2021.
TRACK
After winning gold in the men's 5000 meter on day one, Ryan Buzby doubled back to earn another medal on day two, taking second place in the 3000 meter with a time of 8:12.61. Alex Hislop (4th, 8:21.46), and William Marchant (6th, 8:35.96) also earned points for the Bulls with podium finishes in the 3000 meter.
Johann Matzal earned a bronze medal in the men's 800 meter with a time of 1:54.43. Gabe Watson was also on the podium for Buffalo with a fifth place finish and a time of 1:54.76.
The Bulls had several other athletes take the podium on day two. Brandon Robinson took fourth place in the men's 400 meter with a time of 50.05. Noah Brightman placed fifth in the men's mile with a time of 4:14.80. Jermaine Ewers finished sixth in the men's 60 meter dash with a time of 6.93.
JUMPS
In the women's high jump Zahra Amos tied her school record, winning the gold medal with a mark of 1.80 meters. Amos' MAC title is the first of her career at Buffalo.
In the men's high jump junior Calvin Finger finished in fifth place for the Bulls, securing points for the team, with a final mark of 2.04 meters. Finger's mark fell just short of reaching the all-time UB indoor leaderboards. Freshman Tyler Norton took seventh place with a jump of 1.89 meters.
Manuel Sepulveda set a new personal best and took fifth place in the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.77 meters. Sepulveda's new personal best ranks seventh all-time in UB indoor history.
Freshman Kara Moran took 11th in the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.51 meters, as Emily Tait finished 12th with a mark of 11.39 meters.
In the men's pole vault, junior Brian Murphy took fifth place with a mark of 4.48 meters, earning a podium finish and points for the Bulls.
COMBINED EVENTS
After finishing day one of the men's heptathlon in second place, Kevin Gabalski secured his podium finish on day two, holding his spot in second with a new personal best score of 5,033. The junior started day two with a second place finish in the men's 60 meter hurdles and a time of 8.42. In the heptathlon pole vault, Gabalski took third place with a mark of 4.10 meters, then ending the heptathlon with a sixth place finish in the 1000 meter and a time of 2:59.50. Gabalski's new personal best ranks fifth all-time in UB indoor history.
Freshmen Noah Ruffer (9th, 4,140) and Brady Hughes (10th, 4,068) also competed in the men's heptathlon for the Bulls.
