CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced on Tuesday morning that Akuot Kuany and Kevin Gabalski of the University at Buffalo track and field program earned Athlete of the Week honors following their performances at the Akron Haynes Lancaster Open on Friday night.
Kuany, a freshman competing in her first collegiate meet, earned MAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors. Kuany won the women's high jump with a mark of 1.75 meters. The freshman's mark joined the all-time UB indoor record books, tying Caitlin Godin's personal record set in 2006 for fourth all-time. Kuany's season-opening mark ranks first in the conference and the northeast region, as well as tenth in the NCAA.
Gabalski, a returning junior to the Bulls roster, earned MAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors. Gabalski won the men's 60-meter hurdles at Akron with a new personal record time of 8.11. The junior's new personal record ranks ninth all-time in UB indoor history. Gabalski's season-opening performance ranks first in the conference and is tied for fifth in the NCAA northeast region. This marks the first time the junior has earned Athlete of the Week honors from the conference.
Kuany and Gabalski were just two of many Bulls that enjoyed personal bests and record-breaking performances at Akron. A complete recap of Friday night's competition can be accessed here.
The Bulls continue the indoor track and field season following the winter break, resuming competition on January 17th back at Akron for another Friday night meet. A full schedule for UB Track and Field can be found here.
