BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo linebacker Red Murdock was named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.
Murdock had 11 tackles and a forced fumble in Buffalo's 41-30 win over Akron on Saturday. With the Bulls trailing, 7-0, Murdock forced a fumble that UB recovered and scored, two plays later, to tie the game. Later in the first quarter, Murdock stopped Akron on fourth down, at its own 43, to give the ball back to the Bulls. UB capitalized with a field goal. Murdock ranks third in the nation in tackles with 107 on the season.
A redshirt-sophomore, Murdock is a psychology major with a 3.618 grade point average. He was an Academic All-MAC and Academic All-District selection in 2023.
Murdock is having the best season of his career. He has 107 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, two sacks and a conference-best four forced fumbles.
He is the second UB football player to earn the award this season, joining fellow linebacker Shaun Dolac.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. Each week schools are asked to nominate one female and one male among the sports that are in season at the time. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Murdock and the Bulls are back in action on Tuesday night when they host Ball State at UB Stadium.
