BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo football team concluded spring practice with a scrimmage inside the Murchie Family Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
The scrimmage was moved inside due to rain and head coach Pete Lembo was pleased with the unique setup.
"I really liked the setting; I really liked the atmosphere; I really liked that we were out of the elements and utilizing this wonderful indoor facility, Lembo said."
Rather than a regular game, the Bulls scrimmaged with different units facing off.
The Bulls will have a new starting quarterback in 2026 and three signal-callers have been taking snaps this spring in a battle for the starting role.
Redshirt-Freshman Jason Wright finished the day 6-for-11 for 90 yards and hit Dwayne Early, Jr. in stride for a 40-yard touchdown. Wright also showed off his elusiveness with two runs for 18 yards.
Elijah Holmes, a transfer from Wingate, went 7-for-13 for 57 yards.
Mason Cumbie, a redshirt-junior, threw for 33 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown to Tyrell Simmons, Jr. who made an acrobatic catch over a defender.
The defense looked strong, especially in the defensive backfield. Safety Xavier Leonard, who played primarily special teams last year finished with six tackles and an interception. Linebacker Jordan Owens had five tackles and two tackles for loss. Up front, Stantavious Smith, a transfer from Florida A&M had two sacks in the game.
"There was just enough good on both sides for the offense and the defense to walk away and feel positive but also to know that we have a lot of work ahead of us," Lembo said.
The work will continue throughout the summer until preseason camp begins in August, leading up to the season opener against Albany on Sept. 3 at Broadview Stadium.
