Bulls Host Eastern Michigan To Open MAC Competition for 2024-25 Season
10/23/2024 11:48:00 AM | Swimming and Diving
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo swimming and diving team is set to host their second meet of the season this Saturday at 11 am, opening up Mid-American Conference action against Eastern Michigan University. The Bulls are aiming to raise awareness for breast cancer too, asking fans to wear pink to the meet to support the cause.
The early season MAC competition will serve as a measuring stick for both programs. Earlier in October the conference announced the results of their preseason coaches' poll, with the Bulls being tabbed as fourth, while the Eagles ranked sixth across the eight programs in the MAC. At last year's conference championships, Buffalo took fourth with 442 points as Eastern Michigan finished sixth with 273 points. Since then, the Bulls have welcomed five new newcomers, as the Eagles brought in nine freshmen.
The Bulls began their season two weekends ago on October 12th, competing against Cornell in a meet that had no official team scores. The season-opening competition featured nine event wins for Buffalo, with strong performances from newcomers and new personal best performances from returners in the pool and the diving well.
Freshman Isabella Forsman won two events in her debut with the Bulls, taking the 400-yard individual medley (4:25.08) and the 100-yard individual medley (58.60). Freshman Ava Pauly was strong for the Bulls in breaststroke events too, trailing Sophomore Grace Rider. Rider won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 30.07 as Pauly trailed close behind with a time of 30.70. The two had a repeat performance in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Rider taking second (1:05.82) and Pauly finishing third (1:06.04).
In the diving well the Bulls picked up where they left off in 2023-24, taking all five of the top five spots in both events. 2023-24 MAC Diver of the Year Marialis Kwak won the one-meter (306.38) and three-meter (300.15) events, with both scores already qualifying her for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in the spring. 2023-24 MAC Freshman Diver of the Year Sophie Meuwissen placed second to Kwak in both events, with a new personal record and NCAA Zone Diving qualifying score of 281.18 in the three-meter and a new personal best score in the one-meter of 261.90.
Eastern Michigan began their 2024-25 season in the pool against Cleveland State last Friday, October 18th. The Eagles won the season-opening competition over the Vikings, 190-108.
