BUFFALO, NY β The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (10-7, 4-3 MAC) embarks on a two-game road trip, beginning Saturday night at Toledo.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Mason Lowry (play-by-play) and Rhett Boyd (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on 1400 AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 37th overall meeting between Buffalo and Toledo with the Rockets owning a 27-9 series advantage. The Rockets defeated the Bulls in overtime in the quarterfinals of the 2023 MAC Tournament.
Buffalo put on a show for the thousands of local students in attendance on Education Day as the Bulls defeated Bowling Green 82-72 in an electric atmosphere at Alumni Arena on Wednesday. Redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson gave the kids plenty of reasons to cheer as she scored a career-high 36 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Rana Elhusseini stuffed the stat sheet as well as she recorded 15 points, six rebounds and six assists and the freshman duo of Kirsten Lewis-Williams and Alexis Davis combined for 24 points and 12 rebounds.Β
Watson leads MAC and ranks fifth in the nation in scoring at 23.6 points per game to go with 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per contest. Lewis-Williams currently ranks 12th in the MAC in scoring (11.9 ppg) and rebounding (634 rpg), which is first among all rookies in the league in both categories. Senior Rana Elhusseini (9.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and sophomore Hattie Ogden (8.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg) continue to be impact players for UB while Davis is second on the team in rebounding (6.0 rpg).
As a team, Buffalo is ranked in the top four in the MAC in scoring offense (67.4), scoring defense (63.9), field goal percentage (.425), field goal defense (.387), three-point field goal percentage (.331) and 3FG defense (.296). The Bulls are averaging 33.5 points per game in the paint while also turning defense into offense, averaging 15 points per contest off opponent's turnovers.
The Toledo Rockets are 13-4 overall and 6-1 in league action after defeating Northern Illinois 72-52 on Wednesday. Since the start of 2021-22 season, Toledo is 41-4 in conference play. The Rockets are led offensively by Sophia Wiard who is averaging 16.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. 2023 MAC Player of the Year Quinesha Lockett (14.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg) is also averaging in double figures. Wiard has scored 40 points twice in her career, the only Rocket to do so, and is having the best three-point shooting season ever by a Rocket. Her 3FG percentage (47.4%) would be the highest ever in a season in school history. She is shooting 54.7% from the floor and 66.7% from deep in MAC play. Lockett became the third player in program history to reach 2,000 career points at James Madison in the season opener. She now has 2,150 career points, which ranks sixth among active Division I players and is more than any other active player in the MAC.
Toledo has held opponents to 50 or fewer points five times this season and have held opponents to fewer than 60 points in six of the last eight. UT leads the MAC in scoring defense (58.5) and is the only team in the league to be holding opponents to fewer than 60 points per game. The Rockets are also the top free throw shooting team in the MAC at 74.7%. Tricia Cullup is in her 16th year at the helm of the Rockets. Toledo has hung 11 postseason banners in Cullop's time patrolling the sidelines.
Up next, Buffalo travels to Athens, Ohio for a clash with the Ohio Bobcats on Wednesday, January 31. Tipoff from the Convocation Center is set for 7pm.
