BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo defensive end Max Michel has been named to the watch list for the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy, college football's premier award for community service. Michel was previously named a nominee for the 2023 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team as well.
A native of New Jersey, Michel quickly embraced the Queen City. In December, he held his second annual coat drive. Through his efforts, he was able to collect numerous coats, jackets, gloves and hats and donate them to the Buffalo City Mission.
He also donates his time volunteering at the Buffalo City Mission's kitchen, helping prepare and serve food, emptying the garbage and whatever else he can do to help.
In addition, Michel volunteers his time with Harrison's Playmakers, a non-profit organization that promotes social inclusion and kindness with year-round sports programs and activities for kids with developmental differences and special needs.
Among his numerous other volunteer ventures, Michel organized a group of teammates to work with WNY Peacemakers to distribute free groceries in East Buffalo.
Michel is a four-year letterwinner for the Bulls. Over his career, he has totaled 83 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and four forced fumbles.
Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities' Sports Information Departments and will close on October 16. An up-to-date list of nominees can be found at wuerffeltrophy.org. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 2nd, and finalists will be announced on November 28th. The formal announcement of the 2023 recipient is scheduled to be made during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN December 7th or 8th, and the presentation of the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy will take place on February 17, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, GA.
