ATHENS, Ohio – The University at Buffalo softball team (14-36, 8-18 MAC) defeated the Ohio Bobcats (30-21, 20-9 MAC) on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls upset the Bobcats in the final game of the series, not allowing Ohio to get on the scoreboard. UB won 3-0 to ultimately take the series.
Before the Bobcats had a chance at bat, they found themselves in a 2-0 hole. Mia Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to right allowing Madison Fernimen to score. Brianna Castro then advanced to third. Abbey Nagel then singled up the middle to bring Castro home. With just one out in the inning the Bulls forced an Ohio pitching change.
The Bobcats were held hitless through the first two innings of play.
Alexis Lucyshyn stayed hot at the plate hitting her seventh homer of the season. The Bulls led 3-0 after the third.
The Bobcats threatened to score in the bottom half of the inning as they hit a leadoff double. The runner advanced to third after a ground out. The following batter then had an infield single, but the runner held at third. With runners on the corners, the runner on first advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Bulls got out of the jam as the next two batters popped up and grounded out to Castro at second base. The Bulls held their 3-0 lead.
Ohio almost got on the board in the fourth inning, but once again stranded runners on second and third.
The Bobcats left eight runners on the basepaths on the day, despite outhitting the Bulls, 7-5.
Freshman Emily Watters spoiled Ohio's senior day with a complete game shutout. She allowed seven hits and one walk with one strike out.
Nagel led all players with three hits on the afternoon. Castro and Lucyshyn notched one hit apiece.
Thank you, Bulls fans, for your support this season! A special thank you to our seniors, Brianna Castro, Mykaela Martin, and Kate Vara.
