12/2/2023 5:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (1-7, 0-0 MAC) fell to Big 4 rival St. Bonaventure (5-2, 0-0 A-10) on Saturday afternoon, 80-65.
On the day, Sy Chatman recorded his second double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He added two blocks to his season total of 13. Chatman has now scored double-digit points in all eight games this season. Jonnivius Smith recorded 14 points and six rebounds with a block and takeaway. Kanye Jones recorded back-to-back double digit scoring efforts.
The Bonnies were able to jump out to a first-half 19-point lead as they were 7-for-17 (41.2%) from three-point range. The Bulls struggled to find their deep shot, closing the first half 0-for-8 from three. Buffalo was able to tie the game early at two, but could never breakthrough and take lead. A slow start by the Bulls was too much to overcome as at the halfway point of the first half, the Bulls were down 18-6. At the half, the Bonnies led, 39-21.
In the second half, the Bulls outscored the Bonnies, 44-41. Buffalo was able to force nine turnovers leading to 13 points. Chatman's 16 second half points led all players in the final 20 minutes of action. The effort by the Bulls forced a St. Bonaventure timeout after a Shawn Fulcher steal and Chatman layup. After going 0-for-8 from three in the first half, the Bulls went 2-for 9 in the second after courtesy from Fulcher and Chatman.
On the night, the Bonnies shot 28-for-58 (48.3%) to Buffalo's 22-for-58 (37.9%).
Zaakir Williamson added a season-high seven points.
"Credit to St. Bonaventure, I think Coach [Mark] Schmidt is one of the best coaches not only in Western New York but in the country," stated Head Coach George Halcovage III. "He's been doing it for a long time and had their guys ready. They dealt with some adversity coming to the game with a couple guys out that hadn't been in previous games. Credit to [Mika] Adams-Woods and [Daryl] Banks III who both played a full 40 minutes. I really think they just carried them in a lot of ways, I know [Chad] Venning had a big game, but those guys did a great job of just battling for 40 minutes. Also, credit to our guys for sticking with it for 40 minutes, as well. We went down and our guys kept fighting and played till the final second. So, I'm proud of how we stuck with it."
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 5, as they play the Butler Bulldogs at 8:30 p.m. on FS1.
