11/22/2023 1:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (1-5, 0-0 MAC) fell to the Iona Gaels (2-3, 0-0 MAAC) on Wednesday.
The Iona Gaels offense couldn't be slowed down as they started the game 4-for-4 from the floor, forcing an early Buffalo timeout leading 8-0. That didn't stop the Gaels as they then took a 13-0 lead. Zaakir Williamson ended the Bulls' scoring drought finishing on a second chance layup after securing the offensive rebound. At the half, the Bulls shot 37.9% to Iona's 60.6%.
Buffalo's second half shooting improved in the second half as they finished 10-for-21 (47.6%) from the floor, outshooting Iona. The Gaels' lead was too much for the Bulls to overcome despite scoring 40 second half points.
Sy Chatman recorded a career-high five blocks against the Gaels. Davonta Jordan was the last Bulls to record five blocks in a game against Bowling Green on Jan. 31, 2020. Chatman also led the Bulls with 14 points. Jonnivius Smith finished with his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Lloyd McVeigh scored his first collegiate points in his career, finishing with six. He added three rebounds and one assists on the day. Fellow freshmen Anquan Boldin Jr. and Ryan Sabol finished with eight and nine points, respectively.
The Bulls are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at No. 22 James Madison. Tip is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
