Bulls Host South Alabama for Saturday’s MAC-Sun Belt Challenge

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (0-1, 0-0 MAC) will host the South Alabama Jaguars (0-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) for a Saturday matinee. Both teams look to get in the win column as both the Bulls and Jaguars fell in their season openers on Monday evening.
LAST TIME OUT
On Monday evening against the FDU Knights, the Bulls fell, 92-86. In the game, Isaiah Adams finished with a career-high 28 points. Jonnivius Smith had a career day flying up and down the court. He finished with a career-high 19 points and 19 rebounds. Good for his first double-double in the blue and white.
In his first game back in over a year, Sy Chatman scored 10 points with four rebounds. Newcomer Shawn Fulcher scored 14 points and was 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. Zaakir Williamson raked in a career-high five boards.
Freshman Anquan Boldin Jr. had the Bulls only two steals in the game. As a team, the Bulls made 11 three-pointers and shot .417 from the floor. Adams led the team in assists with eight.
ABOUT THE SERIES
This will mark the first time in program history that the Bulls will play the South Alabama Jaguars. The Bulls are 13-19 (.406) all-time against teams in the Sun Belt.
THE BULL-ETIN BOARD
UB hasn't started 0-2 since the 2013-14 season under Head Coach Bobby Hurley's first season. The Bulls lost to Texas A&M and at Niagara.
This game will be the first of two MAC-Sun Belt Challenge games this season. The second will be on Saturday, Feb. 10. The opponents will be based on real time NCAA RPI/NET rankings in January.
This will mark the first of at least three Sun Belt opponents for the Bulls this season. They'll face James Madison on the road on Nov. 29 and will have their road MAC-Sun Belt Challenge game on Feb. 3. The Bulls could potentially play four Sun Belt teams as they can face Louisiana at the Gulf Coast Showcase in the second-round.
Isaiah Adams has started in all 33 games at Buffalo since joining the team last season.
Jonnivius Smith, a Selma, Ala. native, grew up 150 miles from South Alabama's campus in Mobile, Ala.
The Bulls scored 21 second chance points against the FDU Knights in the season opener. All last season, they only scored 21 second chance points twice; Jan. 7, 2023, vs. NIU; Jan. 27, 2023, at Kent State.
Against Division I teams from the state of Alabama, the Bulls are 7-5 (.583) all-time. This includes Samford (2-0), Jacksonville State (1-0), UAB (1-0), Troy (3-4), Auburn (0-1).
