Bulls Drop Opener at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Featuring 11 newcomers in the starting lineup, the University at Buffalo football team dropped its season opener to Big Ten-foe Maryland, 31-10, on Saturday afternoon at Maryland Stadium. With numerous new faces on both offense and defense, the Bulls put up a valiant effort, especially against the Terps' high-powered offense.
Maryland scored on its opening drive and built its lead to 17-0 midway through the second quarter. Al-Jay Henderson got the Bulls on the board with a 19-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 17-7. It was Henderson's first career touchdown.
The Bulls trailed 17-7 at the half.
The Terrapins added a pair of second-half touchdowns, before Alex McNulty connected on a 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to make the score, 31-10.
Cole Snyder made his first career start at quarterback for the Bulls. The Rutgers-transfer threw for 160 yards. His favorite target was newcomer Justin Marshall who had four catches for 52 yards. Quian Williams and Jamari Gassett each added three catches.
The defense was led by cornerback Logic Hudgens and nickelback Keyshawn Cobb who each had a game-high eight tackles. Safety Marcus Fuqua had an interception in the third quarter for the game's lone turnover.
Linebacker James Patterson, a native of Maryland, had six tackles in the game, including a tackle for loss. He became the 12th player in program history to surpass 300 career tackles.
The Bulls will host Holy Cross next Saturday at 6 pm at UB Stadium.
