Bulls Top Northern Illinois for Program-Record Sixth MAC Dual Win

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team won its program-record sixth Mid-American Conference dual on Saturday afternoon with a thrilling 17-15 come-from-behind victory over Northern Illinois at Alumni Arena. The Bulls trailed 15-11 before winning their final two matches to pull out the 17-15 victory.
Trailing 15-11, with the 197 and 285 bouts remaining. Sam Mitchell started the comeback with a 7-2 decision over Tristan Guaman. Mitchell gave up an early takedown to fall behind, but quickly got a reversal to tie the match and never looked back.
Toby Cahill clinched it for UB with a 5-2 decision over Colin Jagielski. Cahill, too, fell behind early, 2-1. He was able to get an escape in the second period to tie the match, 2-2, headed to the third. Early in the third, Cahill was able to get the takedown and that was the difference in the match.
Derek Spann (133), wrestling in his final home dual of his career, got the Bulls on the board with a 17-2 technical fall over Lucian Brink. It was his 51st career dual win, tying him for second in program history, one behind Kevin Smith (2007-12).
Ben Freeman followed with a 3-2 decision over Jaivon Jones at 141 to extend the UB lead to 8-3
After dropping the 149 match, Michael Petite, back from injury and wrestling in his first dual since November, earned a 7-4 decision over Anthony Gibson to give the Bulls an 11-6 advantage.
Northern Illinois would win the next three matches to take a four-point lead before he Bulls rallied to win the dual.
"I'm proud of these guys," head coach John Stutzman said. "It wasn't our best performance but we found a way to win."
It was the fifth straight dual win for the Bulls who improved to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in the MAC. UB will next travel to #20 Central Michigan on February 13.
Seniors Spann, Arceri and Jake Lanning were all honored prior to the dual.
