Soccer Ties Program Record, Places 12 Student-Athletes on Academic All-MAC Team

BUFFALO, NY – After record-setting season on the pitch, the 2022 Mid-American Conference Champion University at Buffalo women's soccer team continues to excel in the classroom as well, as 12 student-athletes earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC team, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. The 12 Bulls recognized ties last year's squad for the most in program history.
A total of 125 student-athletes across the league were named to this year's squad.
Joining the squad for UB were graduate student Tess Ford, fifth years Abbey Callaghan, Annie Judasz and Emily Kelly, seniors Emily Lazenby, Payton Robertson and Leah Wengender, junior Olivia Bizzoni and sophomores Kaylin Ricci, Alya Ruken, Kaya Schultz and Arianna Zumpano.
"The accolades continue to highlight how talented our student-athletes are," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We continue to set records here at UB as we are champions on the pitch and in the classroom!"
Callaghan earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career as she appeared in 19 games for the Bulls in her final year in the blue and white. The Rochester, NY native recorded three assists and was a key contributor in the UB midfield this season while also playing a major role on set pieces.
After graduating in May, Ford is currently pursuing a master's degree in exercise science/physical therapy. She earns the Academic All-MAC recognition for the fourth time in her career. Ford was an anchor for a historic UB backline, starting all 21 games to help lead the Bulls to 14 clean sheets on the season, tied for the most in program history, and a 0.43 goals against average, while also adding a goal and an assist.
Judasz earns Academic All-MAC honors for the fourth time in her career after also being named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team. The Lancaster, NY native was a key contributor off the bench, appearing in 20 games for the Bulls in her final year in Buffalo. She scored three goals and added two assists and was instrumental on set pieces and in the attacking midfield.
Kelly, a communication major with a 3.856 GPA, also earns the recognition for the fourth time in her career after also being named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team. Kelly earned Second Team All-America and All-Midwest Region first team honors after being named the MAC Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-MAC earlier this season. The Wilson, Ny native finished her storied career as Buffalo's all-time winningest goalkeeper with 54 wins and holds the school record with 35 shutouts while ranking third in program history in career goals against average (0.934) and eighth in career saves (331). Kelly set the single season goals against average (0.43) tied the shutout record (13) and is second in single season wins (15). She led the nation and the MAC in shutouts (13) while also leading the league and ranking in the top 10 nationally in goals against average (0.431) and save percentage (0.878).
A history major with a 3.852 ERA, Lazenby was placed on the squad for the second time in her career after also being named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team. The Ontario native was an anchor for a UB backline that was a major reason for the team's success this season, starting in all 21 games this season, helping lead the Bulls to 14 clean sheets on the season, and a 0.43 goals against average. The Bulls allowed just nine total goals on the season, which is the second fewest in program history.
Robertson, a business administration major with a 3.986 GPA, also earns the recognition for the second time in her career after also being named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team. The All-MAC second team selection rarely came off the field for the Bulls this season, making her impact known on both ends of the field. Starting in all 21 games for the Bulls, the Toronto native scored one goal and led the team and ranked second in the MAC in total assists (8) while helping lead the UB defense to 14 clean sheets on the season.
A business administration major with a 3.77 GPA, Wengender earns the recognition for the second time in her career after also being named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team. The All-MAC second team honoree continued to bring speed and versatility to the Bulls attack, scoring a career-high five goals and recording three assists on 42 shots while starting all 21 games for UB this season.
Bizzoni, an economics major with a 3.859 GPA, also earns the recognition for the second time in her career. The Brampton, Ontario native appeared in all 21 games, earning 12 starts, for the Bulls as a junior, recording one assist and eight shots on the year.
Ricci, an English major with a 3.783 GPA, earns the recognition for the first time in her career. The Massapequa, NY native appeared in 18 games, helping lead the Bulls to 14 clean sheets on the season, and a 0.43 goals against average.
A communication major with a 3.903 GPA, Ruken also earns the recognition for the first time in her career. The Toronto native appeared in 19 games, recording one assist and four shots.
Schultz, a public health major with a 3.838 GPA, was named to the squad for the first time in her career. The West Orange, NJ native appeared in 17 games, earning nine starts, for the Bulls as a sophomore, recording two assists and four shots on the year while controlling a solid UB midfield.
Also earning the recognition for the first time in her career, Zumpano is a mathematics major with a 3.721 GPA. She was also named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team. Zumpano continued to excel and was a force in the Bulls' attack as a sophomore as she tied for the team lead with eight goals on 39 shots, while also adding an assist.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that sport. Student-athletes in their first year of competition are not eligible.
