BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team looks for their first win of the 2022-23 season, the first in the Becky Burke era, on Monday night as they travel to Easton, Mass. for a clash with the Stonehill Skyhawks.
The game will be streamed on NEC Front Row with Charlie Bergeron (play-by-play) and Brian Buckley (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kruezer on the call.
This is the first meeting between the two programs. This will be the first-ever Division 1 home game for Stonehill, after announcing it had accepted an invitation to join the Northeast Conference and commence a four-year transition to full NCAA Division I membership on April 5. The Skyhawks started their four-year transition on July 1 and will earn full NCAA Division I membership in 2026-27.
Buffalo dropped a heartbreaker, 57-55, in the regular season opener at Canisius on Monday night. The Bulls led by as many as nine in the third quarter but were unable to convert in at the charity stripe late in the game and that proved costly. Fifth year guard Zakiyah Winfield led the Bulls as she recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists, three steals and three blocks. Re'Shawna Stone and Latrice Perkins added eight points each.
The Stonehill Skyhawks are 0-2 overall after falling 56-32 at Providence on Friday night. The Skyhawks return six letterwinners, including three starters from its 2021-22 team that finished 16-9, including 12-7 in the NE10, reaching the Conference Championship game, led by fifth-year Emily Bramanti who earned All-Northeast-10 Conference second team honors last season. The Skyhawks were picked to finish ninth in its first Northeast Conference season by the league's head coaches. Trisha Brown is in her 22nd season as head coach of the women's basketball program at Stonehill College. Brown and has established herself as one of the premier coaches in the region and ranked 30th among active coaches in Division II with a .685 winning percentage, having led Stonehill to 13 NCAA tournament appearances.
Up next, Buffalo will return to Alumni Arena for its home opener on Saturday, November 19 against the No. 24 ranked Princeton Tigers at 12pm.
