
Bulls Set Records at Akron Last Chance Invite

AKRON, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team (2-0, 1-0 MAC) competed at the Akron Last Chance Invite hosted by the seven-time reigning Mid-American Conference champion University of Akron (2-1, 2-1 MAC). Ohio University (3-1, 1-1 MAC) also competed at the three-day invite that wrapped up late on Sunday evening.
SATURDAY RECAP
To start the invite, the Bulls finished fourth in the 200 medley relay. Maddy McDonough, Kasey Keaney, Clarice Fisher and Grace Wood finished in 1:44.69.
Freshman Marij van der Mast broke into the record books as she won the 500 freestyle in 4:50.13, now fifth in school history. Joining her fellow teammate, Katie Pollock would change the record books as she won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.55 setting a new school record. Michaela Morgus would go on and finish fifth in 1:02.87, her season-best and breaking her own top-10 time she set earlier this season. Morgus moves from 10th to fourth.
Fisher finished third in the 100 fly in 54.61 seconds, good for her season-best.
The Bulls had a dominant performance in the 400 IM as they finished first, third and fifth. Olivia Sapio claimed first in 4:16.98, Brittney Beetcher finished third in 4:20.61, as Jaidyn Wolfe finished in fifth with a time of 4:24.31.
Toni Naccarella won the 100 freestyle in style as she improved her top-10 time in the event by nearly shaving a whole second off. She finished in 48.54 seconds as her previous best was 49.46 seconds.
SUNDAY RECAP
Beetcher had a stellar performance in the 1,650 freestyle as she won in a time of 16:36.92, just four seconds off her personal-best and top-10 time.
Freshmen Mia Naccarella and van der Mast finished fourth and third in the 200 freestyle out of 24 swimmers, respectively. Naccarella finished in 1:51.54 as van der Mast finished in 1:49.83, both season-best times.
McDonough wasn't done for the Bulls as she finished third in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.22. McDonough improved her top-10 time of 1:58.58, she still ranks second in the event.
UB had three swimmers reach the finals in the 50 freestyle. T. Naccarella would take first in 22.67 seconds with fellow teammate Jillian Lawton finishing in second with a time of 22.67 seconds. Fisher had an admirable heat as she placed sixth in 23.53 seconds.
Roitenberg and Fisher would finish first and third in the 200 fly in a tight heat. Roitenberg won the event in 1:58.46 with Fisher finishing in 1:59.92. Roitenberg's time is now the school record.
In the final individual event of the invite, Sapio would win the 200 IM in a time of 2:02.65.
The Bulls would close out the invite taking second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:23.90. The team of Sapio, Lawton, Beetcher and Roitenberg would narrowly beat Ohio by .07 seconds.
NEXT UP
The Bulls will be off next week as the diving squad prepares for the NCAA Diving Zones from Monday, March 8 through Wednesday, March 10. This year's diving zones will be held in Blacksburg, Va., hosted by Virginia Tech University. The swimmers will be back in action on Saturday, March 12 as they travel to Toledo for a dual meet against the Rockets. The Bulls will also face Bowling Green that weekend on Sunday.
