2/26/2021 10:32:00 AM | Swimming and Diving
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team (2-0, 1-0 MAC) will face the University of Akron (2-1, 2-1 MAC) and Ohio University (3-1, 1-1 MAC) at the Akron Last Chance Invite this weekend. The three-day invite is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m., but the Bulls will participate on Saturday, Feb. 27 and Sunday, Feb. 28. Akron will host the invite at the Ocasek Natatorium.
LAST MEETING
The Bulls and Zips have faced each other twice this season. The first coming in December when the Bulls placed second at the Zippy Invitational and more recently when the Zips traveled to Buffalo. The Bulls would then take down the Zips in a dual meet, 169-131. The last time the Bulls saw Ohio was at the 2020 MAC Championships, but they did host the Bobcats in a dual meet where the Bulls came out victorious, 218-81.
LAST TIME OUT
The swimmers have been off since Feb. 5 when they hosted Akron. During the Bulls 169-131 win over the Zips, UB had a strong day in the pool as they won 11 of the 14 swimming events against the Zips. A competitive meet to the end, the Bulls performed at their best to secure the win.
Junior Toni Naccarella would earn MAC Women's Swimmer of the Week honors following her performance against the Zips. She would help the team receive 33 of their 169 points. Naccarella claimed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.70. That would be the worst position she'd place on the evening as she would see gold the rest of the night. In the 50 freestyle she won with a time of 23.12 seconds. She would end up winning the 100 freestyle by nearly a second and a half with a time of 50.85 seconds. To close out the dual meet, Naccarella was the anchor in the 400 freestyle relay where the team was in second place heading into the final 100 yards. She would help the Bulls win by .60 seconds and clinch the victory.
The 200 medley relay team of Nicole Roitenberg, Katie Pollock, Jillian Lawton and Jenna Krull finished in a time of 1:42.36 for first place.
For the first time this season, the Bulls competed in the 1,000 freestyle. Brittney Beetcher finished in a first place time of 10:16.60. Julia Boswell finished in 10:39.14 for fourth place.
The duo of Marij van der Mast (1:52.36) and Toni Naccarella (1:52.70) had the one-two punch as they finished in first and second in the 200 freestyle, respectively.
To clinch the victory, the Bulls relay team of Jillian Lawton, Brittney Beetcher, Allison Stockwell and Toni Naccarella won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:29.40.
