BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's basketball team will ring in 2022 with a trip to Akron on Saturday afternoon. Since the 1971-72 season, when game dates were easily accessible, this will be just the second time Buffalo plays on Jan. 1 and the first time since the 1993-94 season when they lost 90-72 at Cal St.-Northridge.
Saturday's game was originally scheduled for Feb. 1, but with both Buffalo and Akron needing an opponent due to COVID issues with their respective original opponents, the game was moved to Jan. 1, opening the original date for potential makeups.
The Bulls are coming off a 91-81 loss to Miami (OH) in its MAC opener on Wednesday night. Three UB players scored 20 or more points in the contest, led by 26 points and 17 boards from Josh Mballa. Seniors Ronaldo Segu and Jeenathan Williams added 21 and 20 points, respectively. It was the first time since Nov. 29, 2017 at Niagara that three Buffalo players scored 20 or more points in a game.
Akron, who had its first league game against Bowling Green postponed, has not played a game since Dec. 15 against Wright State.
The Bulls and Zips have one common non-conference opponent as both teams played Point Park in non-conference play during November.
