BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team opens Mid-American Conference play against Central Michigan on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Arena at 1pm. It is the first game of a doubleheader with the UB men.
The game will be streamed on ESPN3 with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Sal Capaccio (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520AM or on the Varsity Network with Matt Mattia on the call.
Buffalo finished non-conference play with a 6-4 overall record after falling at Bucknell 80-69 loss on December 20. The Bulls scored 43 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome a slow start. Freshman guard Georgia Woolley recorded the first double-double of her career, leading all scorers with 22 points to go with 11 rebounds. Junior guard Dyaisha Fair scored 20 points and Summer Hemphill notched her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds while tying a career-high with four blocks.
Fair leads the Bulls and ranks 10th in the nation in scoring at 21.3 points per game. Hemphill is almost averaging a double-double with 14.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while Woolley has scored in double figures in five straight games and is averaging 9.6 points per game. The Bulls are ranked 53rd in the latest NET rankings, the highest of any MAC schools. They are also ranked 15th in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
Central Michigan concluded non-conference play with a 2-7 overall record after falling 71-67 at Green Bay on December 20. The Chippewas are led offensively by Molly Davis who is averaging 16.4 points and 4.0 assists per game. Jahari Smith is nearly averaging a double-double with 10.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Central Michigan was picked to finish sixth in the preseason MAC coaches poll. CMU defeated Bowling Green in the MAC Championship game last season. The Chippewas continue to excel at the charity stripe as they are second in the MAC and 31st in the nation in free throw percentage (76.8).
Up next, Buffalo will hit the road for a two-game road trip, beginning in Oxford, OH for a New Year's Day clash with the Miami (OH) RedHawks at Millet Hall at 1pm.
