KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo volleyball team snapped a seven-match losing streak on Friday night as the Bulls held on for a 3-2 victory at Kent State. The win was Buffalo's 10th of the season as UB moved to 3-7 in MAC play.
Buffalo took the contest 25-22, 25-22, 25-27, 14-25, 15-11 despite being outhit .236 to .178. The Bulls had a balanced attack that saw five players in double figures in kills, while defensively three players finished in double figures in digs.
The Bulls raced out to the 11-7 lead in the opening set and led just 19-18 when three straight points gave UB the 22-18 lead. The Golden Flashes pulled back within 22-21, but a quick 3-1 run capped off on a kill from Stacia Gollogly gave the Bulls the first set.
Buffalo got out to a 16-12 lead in the second set after a kill from sophomore Emma Gielas. Kent State would again pull within one late at 21-20, but UB had the next two points, and a Kent State service error gave Buffalo the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was competitive through out as the Bulls would have two match points, but the Golden Flashes fought them both off and took the set 27-25 to get on the board. A 25-14 win in set four by Kent State sent the contest to a fifth and pivotal set.
The fifth went back and forth as both teams tried to take the momentum. Every time the Bulls would take the lead, Kent State had an answer and the teams found themselves tied at 11-11 with the race to four points underway. A ball handling error by Kent State started a match-ending 4-0 run as back-to-back kills from Courtney Okwara clinched the set and the match for UB.
Okwara and Gielas each led the way with 14 kills, while three additional Buffalo players had 12 kills, including Gollogly, Maria Futey, and sophomore Milla Malik. Gollogly was making the start in the middle and responded well to the position adjustment.
Freshman Mandy Leigh was spot on running the offense as she had 54 assists, as she spread the ball around with four Bulls taking over 30 swings. Leigh also had three kills on five attacks and led the Bulls with 16 digs.
In addition to Leigh's digging total, Jenna Sonnenberg had 13 digs and Futey added 10. In a match that featured 30.0 total blocks between the two teams, the Bulls finished with 13.0 of them led by eight from Okwara and Gielas.
The Bulls and Golden Flashes return to action tomorrow at 4pm at the M.A.C. Center. That match will air on ESPN3.
