BUFFALO, NY – Five former University at Buffalo Athletics standouts have been selected for induction into the Dr. and Mrs. Edmund J. Gicewicz Family UB Athletics Hall of Fame. The class of 2022 consists of Kourtney Brown (women's basketball), Craig Guest (football), Brian McCallion (men's soccer), Andreea Novaceanu (women's tennis) and Ed Wright (hockey coach and UB administrator).
Brown played for the Bulls from 2006-11 and is Buffalo's all-time leader in scoring (1,995), rebounding (1,124) and blocked shots (260). In 2011, she became the first, and to this date the program's only, Mid-American Conference Player of the Year. She is a two-time MAC Defensive Player of the Year and a 2011 honorable mention All-American. Brown holds the single-season MAC record for field goals made and is the MAC's career record holder for blocked shots.
A hard-hitting linebacker, Guest was a terror on the gridiron from 1992-96. A two-time All-ECAC First Team selection, he ranks second in program history in career tackles with 455, including a single-season school-record 161 in 1995. His 80 solo stops in 1996 are the most in school history, while his 77 solo tackles in 1995 rank second. Guest was a third-team All-American in 1996 and an honorable mention All-American in 1995.
McCallion was a standout on the pitch for the men's soccer team from 1997-00. A four-time all-conference selection, he started every game of his four-year career – the first player in UB's Division I history to accomplish the feat. He ranks third in program history in career assists with 17 – two shy of the school record. McCallion was the 2001 Clifford C. Furnas Award winner and in 2014 was named the Alumnus of the Year by the UB School of Management.
Novaceanu played women's tennis for the Bulls from 2004-08. A native of Romania, she holds UB's record for career singles victories with 83 and helped lead the Bulls to their first ever Mid-American Conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008. Novaceanu is a three-time first-team All-MAC selection and four-time All-Conference honoree, earning MAC Newcomer of the Year recognition in 2005. Novaceanu was also named the 2008 ITA East Senior Player of the Year.
Wright is a pioneer in the sport of hockey. He served as head coach of the men's hockey program from 1970-81, 1986-87, and in doing so, became the nation's first African-American head coach of a collegiate hockey program. He led the Bulls to 138 wins over his career, including six winning seasons. Following his coaching career, he remained at UB as an administrator until his retirement in 2012. Wright is credited with forming UB's recreation and intramural program.
The induction ceremony for the 2022 UB Athletics Hall of Fame Class will be held in February. Be sure to check back for more details.
