MOUNT PLEASANT, MI – It was another close loss for the University at Buffalo wrestling team as the Bulls fell on the road at Central Michigan, 24-15. The dual was tied, 15-15, before the Chippewas won the final two matches to pull away for the victory.
Trailing 6-0 in the dual, Derek Spann got the Bulls on the board with a 4-0 decision over Brock Bergelin at 133 lbs. The redshirt-junior improved to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in MAC duals with the win.
Central Michigan and Buffalo split the next two matches in close fashion. At 141, Marcus Robinson wrestled well and held a third-period lead over 17th-ranked Dresden Smith. However, Smith was able to get a takedown in the closing seconds of the bout to turn a 7-6 deficit into an 8-7 victory.
John Arceri returned the favor with a late victory for UB at 149. With his match against Mason Breece tied, 3-3, late in the third, Arceri earned a takedown with just 10 seconds remaining to win by decision.
Troy Keller continued his MAC dominance with a pin of Blake Montrie at 165. Keller was in total control the entire match and it looked like he was going to win by decision. However, he was able to turn Montrie and earn the pin with just four seconds left on the clock to tie the dual, 12-12. It was Keller's 14th straight dual win.
After the Bulls fell behind, 15-12, Pete Acciardi tied up the dual again with a 7-5 decision over Ben Cushman. Acciardi continues to wrestle well, winning his fifth straight dual match.
However, the Bulls dropped the last two matches and ultimately the dual.
"Once again we fought hard but at the end of the day, the little things keep beating us," head coach John Stutzman said. "We need to finish periods and stop giving away points. We're not far off with this young team."
The Bulls are back in action at Northern Illinois next Friday.
