YPSILANTI, MI – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team struggled offensively on Tuesday night as UB shot just 35.5%, falling at Eastern Michigan, 66-62. The loss drops the Bulls to 14-9 and 5-5 in league play.
Buffalo was unable to find its shooting touch all night as the Bulls shot 5-of-28 from three-point range, while turning it over 17 times.
The Eagles took an 11-point lead in the opening half as Buffalo found itself trailing 30-19 with 3:45 left, but the Bulls did a good job cutting into the Eastern Michigan lead as UB went into the break trailing by just five at 35-30.
Sophomore Josh Mballa gave the Bulls a lift to start the second half as he scored the first seven Buffalo points as UB opened the half on a 9-2 run, taking its first lead of the game. A tip-in put back from Mballa gave the Bulls their largest lead of the night at 50-45 with 9:16 remaining.
An 11-3 run from the Eagles put Eastern Michigan back ahead, but a three from Davonta Jordan tied it back up at 58-58 with 4:17 left. However, EMU would go on to score the next five points to regain a 63-58 lead with 1:39 left. Senior Antwain Johnson pulled Buffalo back within one as he was fouled on a three-pointer and completed the four-point play.
The Eagles would go back up by three as the Bulls had a few more opportunities to tie it up but missed a pair of three-point attempts and the Eagles iced the game at the free throw line with 2.7 seconds left.
Mballa had his third straight double-double as he finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Gabe Grant finished with 10 points and four boards off the bench.
Johnson had nine points, while junior Jayvon Graves finished with eight points and a season-high 10 rebounds.
UB held a 43-35 advantage on the glass and like they have done on the road this year, the Bulls were solid from the free throw line, going 13-of-15.
Buffalo returns home on Friday night when the Bulls host Central Michigan at 9pm on ESPNU. The Bulls defeated the Chippewas in Mt. Pleasant earlier this year.
