BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo softball head coach Mike Ruechel announced on Friday the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent.
"We certainly are looking forward to getting our 2021 class of recruits on campus next fall as we feel they have a lot to offer our program" said Ruechel. "All three are high character kids that do really well in the classroom and are exceptional softball players as well."
Marissa Calloway – Eden, NY – Eden High School – P/3B
Calloway comes to Buffalo from Eden, NY where she competes for Eden High School. She has put up impressive numbers in her first three seasons with the Raiders, recording a school-record .579 batting average, 140 hits, and 29 doubles while also adding 99 RBI, nine home runs and 95 runs scored. Calloway was named ECIC-4 Pitcher of the Year and has also earned first team all-ECIC, first team all-Western New York, first team all-state honors. Additionally, Calloway has helped lead the Raiders to four ECIC-4 division championships, two Section 6 B2 championships, an ECIC Class B championship and an appearance in the New York State Championship semifinals.
Ruechel on Calloway: "Marissa is a strong and versatile player who will strengthen both our infield and our pitching staff. She also adds a lot to the offensive side of the ball, having the ability to hit for average and power which is a great plus in the middle of the line-up."
Ella Rivera – Smithtown, NY – Hauppage High School - OF
Rivera comes to Buffalo from Smithtown, NY where she competes for Hauppauge High School. She recorded a .291 batting average with seven hits, three RBI and five runs scored in 24 at bats as a junior, while also recording an unblemished 1.000 fielding percentage. She also plays her club ball for Team Long Island Demarini. Off the field, Rivera is a member of the National Honor Society.
Ruechel on Rivera: "Ella has all the tools we look for in an outfielder. She has a great first step, covers a lot of ground, and throws well from the outfield. We also like what she brings to the table as a hitter with her ability to put pressure on the defense in multiple ways."
Aly Wasielewski – Buffalo, NY – City Honors – IF
Wasielewski is a Buffalo native who currently attends City Honors where she plays for head coach Lou Bishop. Primarily competing at shortstop and second base, she currently has a .353 batting average with nine RBI and two home runs. Wasielewski plays her club ball with the TC Tremors.
Ruechel on Wasielewski: "In Aly, we are getting a solid and consistent middle infielder who moves very well and can swing the bat. On top of that she has exceptional arm strength which will allow us to use her in multiple positions if needed."
