CLARION, PA – The University at Buffalo wrestling team had its five-dual win streak snapped at Clarion, 17-16, on Friday night. The dual was tied, 16-16, after 10 bouts, but the Golden Eagles were victorious after it came down to criteria.
It was a close dual throughout with neither team able to pull away. Trailing, 3-0, Derek Spann got the Bulls on the board first with an 8-3 decision over Seth Koleno. The win extended Spann's dual meet win streak to 12.
Marcus Robinson followed with a dominant win at 141. The redshirt-freshman earned a 13-4 major decision over Alex Blake for his fifth straight dual win.
After dropping a close match at 149, the Bulls got back in the win column thanks to Michael Petite at 157. The redshirt-freshman stayed perfect in duals on the season (6-0) with a 6-4 decision over Avery Shay.
Troy Keller increased the UB lead to 13-6 with a 5-0 decision over Mike Bartolo at 165. It was Keller's 12th-straight dual win and the fourth-straight dual his opponent has not scored a point.
Pete Acciardi extended the Buffalo lead to 16-10 with a 3-1 decision over Luke Funck at 184. The redshirt-freshman scored a takedown in the final minute of the match to pull out the victory.
However, the Golden Eagles won the 197 and 285 bouts to tie the score at the end of regulation. The Clarion won the dual on criteria (44-42 total match points).
"We fought hard," head coach John Stutzman said. "Losing on criteria is always hard, but if we use it as a teaching tool, we will grow from it."
The Bulls (7-7, 3-3 MAC) will be back in action next Saturday against Kent State at Alumni Arena.
