BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo track and field junior Leon Atkins, who specializes in middle distance events, was named Track & Field Athlete of the Week by the Mid-American Conference for his performance this past weekend at the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell University over the weekend, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. This is the second time this year, and the first in his outdoor career, that Atkins has been awarded the honors.
Atkins ran a very impressive double at the Bison Outdoor Classic, pacing himself to a strong win in the unseeded section of the 1500m, running a new personal best by over seven seconds with a time of 3:53.28 Saturday. On Sunday, Atkins returned to the track to win the 800m race in a time of 1:49.97, ranking him #28 in NCAA East and first in MAC. Atkins' 800m time qualifies as a MAC Auto qualifying mark.
Up next, Atkins and his teammates will have a busy weekend of action as they split up with part of the team competing at Ohio State and others competing at the Larry Ellis Invite in Princeton, N.J.
